Whether you’re a seasoned coffee aficionado or a curious beginner, our guide is designed to help you brew the perfect cup of coffee at home. From the rich and robust flavors of a French Press to the smooth and mellow notes of a Cold Brew, we’ve got you covered.

Each method is carefully outlined with detailed steps and the necessary equipment to ensure that you can enjoy our specialty coffee just the way you like it.

1. Pour Over

What you'll need:

  • La Vela Coffee 0.7 oz  (20 g, medium grind)
  • Pour Over Dripper (e.g., V60)
  • Paper Filter
  • Kettle (preferably with a gooseneck spout)
  • Scale
  • Timer
  • Mug or Carafe 

Steps:

  1. Boil Water: Heat water to 200°F (93°C).
  2. Prepare Filter: Place the paper filter in the dripper and rinse with hot water to eliminate paper taste and warm up the dripper.
  3. Add Coffee: Place the dripper on your mug or carafe, add 0.7 oz (20 g) of coffee grounds.
  4. Bloom: Pour 1.40 oz (40 g) of water over the coffee grounds, making sure to saturate all the grounds. Wait 30 seconds.
  5. Brew: Slowly pour the remaining 9.17 oz (260 g) of water in a circular motion over the next 2-3 minutes.
  6. Serve: Once the brewing is complete, remove the dripper and enjoy your coffee.

 

2. French Press

What you'll need:

  • La Vela Coffee 1.05 oz (30 g, coarse grind)
  • French Press
  • Kettle
  • Scale
  • Timer
  • Spoon

Steps: 

  1. Boil Water: Heat water to 200°F (93°C).
  2. Add Coffee: Add 1.05 oz (30 g) of coffee grounds to the French Press.
  3. Add Water: Pour 17.63 oz (500 g) of hot water over the grounds.
  4. Stir: Stir the coffee and water mixture to ensure all grounds are saturated.
  5. Steep: Place the lid on the French Press (plunger up) and let it steep for 4 minutes.
  6. Press: Slowly press the plunger down.
  7. Serve: Pour your coffee into a mug and enjoy.

 

3. Espresso Machine

What You'll Need: 

  • La Vela Coffee 0.63 oz (18 g, fine grind)
  • Espresso Machine
  • Tamper
  • Scale
  • Timer
  • Espresso Cup

Steps:

  1. Preheat: Turn on your espresso machine and let it heat up.
  2. Grind Coffee: Grind 0.63 oz (18 g) of whole bean coffee to a fine consistency.
  3. Prepare Portafilter: Add the coffee grounds to the portafilter, distribute evenly, and tamp firmly.
  4. Brew: Insert the portafilter into the machine and start the extraction. Aim for a 25-30 second extraction time for a double shot 1.26 oz (36 g) of espresso.
  5. Serve: Enjoy your espresso as is, or use it as a base for other drinks like lattes or cappuccinos.

 

4. Drip Coffee

What You'll Need:

  • La Vela Coffee 1.94 oz (55 g, medium grind)
  • Drip Coffee Maker
  • Paper Filter
  • Water

Steps:

  1. Prepare Coffee Maker: Place a paper filter in the basket and add 55 g of coffee grounds.
  2. Add Water: Fill the coffee maker's reservoir with 1 liter (35.27 oz or 1,000 g) of water.
  3. Brew: Start the coffee maker and let it brew.
  4. Serve: Once the brewing is complete, pour the coffee into a mug and enjoy.

 

5. Moka Pot

What You'll Need:

  • La Vela Coffee, medium-fine grind; amount of coffee is dependent on moka pot
  • Moka Pot
  • Water
  • Stove or Burner

Steps:

  1. Prepare Moka Pot: Fill the bottom chamber with water up to the safety valve.
  2. Add Coffee: Add coffee grounds to the filter basket, leveling off without packing it down.
  3. Assemble: Assemble the Moka Pot and place it on the stove over medium heat.
  4. Brew: Wait for the coffee to start bubbling up into the top chamber. Remove from heat once the top chamber is full.
  5. Serve: Pour your coffee into a cup and enjoy.

 

6. Cold Brew

What You'll Need:

  • 3.52 oz (100 g) of coarsely ground coffee
  • 1 liter of cold, filtered water
  • A large jar or pitcher
  • A fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth

Steps:

  1. Combine Coffee and Water: Add coarsely ground coffee to your jar or pitcher. Pour 1 liter (35.27 oz or 1,000 g) of cold, filtered water over the coffee.
  2. Stir: Stir the mixture gently to ensure all the coffee grounds are saturated.
  3. Steep: Cover the jar or pitcher and let it steep in the refrigerator for 12-24 hours.
  4. Strain: After steeping, strain the coffee through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove the grounds.
  5. Serve: Pour the cold brew concentrate into a glass over ice. Dilute with water or milk to taste.

 

7. Chemex

What You'll Need: 

  • La Vela Coffee 1.05 oz (30 g, medium-coarse grind)
  • 17.63 oz (500 g) of water (heated to 200°F)
  • Chemex
  • Chemex Paper Filter
  • Kettle (preferably with a gooseneck spout)

Steps:

  1. Prepare Chemex: Place a Chemex filter in the Chemex, rinse it with hot water, and discard the water.
  2. Add Coffee: Add coffee to the filter.
  3. Bloom: Pour 2.11 oz ( 60 grams) of water over the coffee, ensuring all grounds are saturated. Let it bloom for 30-45 seconds.
  4. Brew: Slowly pour the remaining water in a circular motion. Aim for a total brew time of 3.5 to 4 minutes.
  5. Serve: Remove the filter and pour the coffee into your favorite mug.
